HYDE - Birth
Soft Pastels on Paper with Broken Sheet of Glass 11.7in x 16.5in HYDE aka Haven’t You Done Enough? A woman in our world is highly underappreciated right from her birth. HYDE is a five part series that takes a stand for women in this world with real issues, forgotten issues and issues that emotionally kill a woman, being worse than brutal mortal murder. HYDE takes you step by step into the fictional life of a woman, who has gone or could go through five different punishments. It is a stand I take for women worldwide. The Five Parts of this series are-Abortion, Female Circumcision, Female Trafficking, Blinding Ritual and Suppressing Female Voice. This is Birth (stage one), in major parts of the world, especially India even today, it is thought unlucky to have a daughter. So unlucky that parents tend to get the fetus aborted when they discover the gender of the baby. No, the mother has no say in the matter, she is in stage five of HYDE. Imagine being controlled before you were born.
HYDE - Puberty
Acrylic on Paper 11.7in x 16.5in HYDE aka Haven’t You Done Enough? This is Puberty (stage two). Did you know it is illegal to know the gender of a baby before birth in India? So if you are an Indian woman reading this, congratulations you survived stage one. However, if you are in Somalia, the fight isn’t over for you yet. According to the 2005 WHO estimate, 97% of women went through female circumcision in Somalia. This horrific practice takes place in more countries of the world than we know of. In the painting shown, you see a petal of the flower being sliced away by a razor. When they can not take your life, they try to take your pleasure away. Sometimes the world saddens me and uplifts me with everything women go through. Even though the entire world seems to be absolutely against women, we still somehow survive and thrive.
HYDE - Teenage
Mixed mediums on Paper 11.7in x 16.5in HYDE aka Haven’t You Done Enough? This is Teenage (stage three). Ever been worried that a random Samaritan on the street might just sell you? I have. Every single one of my female friends have. It is almost as if the world says, “Alright, I let you be born AND have pleasure; you might as well make ME some money from it. What more can you want?” As much as we have grown as a society, we still have ALL these issues between the lines. Just because an issue is well hidden does not mean it doesn’t exist. So feel lucky, I guess, you are alive and get to experience pleasure with people you choose. This is what lucky is supposed to feel like, right?
HYDE - Adulthood One
Pen on Paper 8.3in x 11.7in HYDE aka Haven’t You Done Enough? This is Adulthood One or the Blinding Ritual (stage four). This is where you land if you were fortunate enough to pass through the first 3 stages. You fight your way into the world and try to live, thrive and express yourself. You form a sense of personality and thats when they perform the ritual to STOP you. Blind you from having ideologies, viewpoints, likes/dislikes or just basic rights. They make you believe these are mere fairytales. That ideologies and choices only occur in movies, books, fantasy. However, even in this fictional world you answer to a Man. You stand behind him. You are there to cater to their needs. Your are selfish and unloveable if you think of yourself. Blinded to the point of no return, that my own Mother, a pioneer of equality for women in my family and a working woman, needs to be reminded that she CAN watch a show that my Father does not like.
HYDE - Adulthood Two
Pen on Paper 8.3in x 11.7in HYDE aka Haven’t You Done Enough? This is Stage Five, Suppressing Female Voice. If you were lucky enough to surpass the stages before, the world tries to silence you. God forbid, you form opinions, speak facts or generate mere ideas. You absolutely forget that a person can have likes and dislikes, let alone a basic self powered human emotion. 100% of women in the world are stuck in this stage. No matter if you pass the other stages, no matter even if you do end up having a voice, every woman holds back in one are of her life. Is made to feel, guilty, selfish or inadequate if she chooses herself before anything else. A man would not have a problem ever holding back. These pieces were made at different stages of my life when I went through them or when I learned about them. Adulthood One and Two were made as the finishing pieces when I realized they were all connected.
